What To Do On A Sinking Boat

Boats sink. Granted, it thankfully happens a lot less these days but they do still happen all around the world, even on five star cruises. There are a lot more ships that head towards the bottom of the sea than say planes that fall to earth, so knowing what to do in the event of a sinking could serve you well. Remember these 5 points and you’ll stand a much better chance of getting out alive
Life jacket. If you do one thing to help save your life, make sure it is wearing a life jacket. more people owe their lives to this piece of equipment than any other water safety item. The main reasons for this is that they always force you to the waters surface, despite which direction you are pointing or how disorientated you are. Secondly you cannot stay afloat without one for any great length of time as you will start to become fatigued
Keep calm. The majority of survivors from sinking ships attribute their survival to staying calm. You use up a great deal more energy when you become panicked and the choices you make are often not the best as you head is not clear. You usually have a bit of time when a ship starts to sink, so just remember to think everything through clearly and you’ll make better judgement calls
Be on the ships deck.Below deck is simple the worst place to be on a ship that is heading down. There are a lot more hazards below deck and you can easily get trapped in rooms or pockets of water. make your way up to the deck of the ship and do not move from there
Swim away from ship. Crude tests have contradicted the idea that a ship going down will suck down surrounding things with it. However, no one can really predict what would happen with any degree of accuracy and people who have experienced it first hand have claimed that a pull effect does occur. To rather be safe than sorry, move at least 60 meters away from the sinking ship
Stay together. Getting into a big group when you are in the water is the best thing you can do, provided you no not have a life boat that is. This will improve your visibility to any rescuers, it will maintain your body temperature as best as possible and will minimise you chances of being attacked by predators as they will class your group as a large animal.
