“Farm Cove” – in the modern day “Botanical Gardens” was the original farm of the First Fleet. Nine acres of corn was established on either side of a small stream. Nearby “Garden Island” was cleared by the crew of HMS Sirius as a garden for the ship’s company. It became a naval base in 1856. You can still see a rigging shed, sail loft, barracks, stores and sick bay that date to 1880’s.
“Fort Denison” – in the middle of the harbor – is Sydney’s Alcatraz. It was originally called “Pinchgut” and was used as a penal island. The first convict was sent there on 8th February 1788 for stealing biscuits. The original sandstone cliffs were quarried to build the fort and tower in 1857 to defend Sydney against a threat from Russian warships.
